I was fortunate enough to go to the El Mundo Metropoli awards for the best restaurants in Madrid last week. I felt like I was on a personalised wine and jamon tasting tour with my appointed food guru of Spain. Fantastic. Here I list all the winners, with runners up in itlaics. More will come as I get around to try them over the next few months…
Restaurant of the year
- Pinera: North of the city, owned and run by Marrón brothers. It has a non-smoking section and a menu in English. Address: Rosario Pino, 12 – 28012 Madrid. +34 914.251.425.

Restaurant Revelation
- Arzabal: Calle del Doctor Castelo 2, 28009 Madrid. +34 915 57 26 91. This is near Retiro park and the fabulous Laredo bar and restaurant.
- Mandi: Calle de Almagro 20, 28010 Madrid. +34 913 10 45 20. This is in my neck of the woods (Chamberi) and a review will follow soon.

Best Decor
- Bar Tomate: Mediteranean food including breakfasts and lunches plus bar in the evening. Calle de Fernando ‘El Santo’ 26, 28010 Madrid. +34 917 02 38 70. Again, this is in my neighbourhood. I am going to be a busy girl!
- Espacio 33: Way up north of madrid, this resto has greta views over the city. It is closed on Sundays. 33 de la Torre, 28029 – Madrid.
- La Gabinoteca: This has great ratings all around. has a no smoking section. Calle de Fernández de la Hoz 53, 28003 Madrid. +34 913 991 500.
Best Tapas or Wine Bars
- Casa Santona: Well known for its anchovy dishes, this restaurant is near Retiro.Avenida de Nazaret 10, 28009 Madrid.+34 91 409 63 25
- La Cave du Petit: This looks like a great cheap and cheerful to try with friends. Calle de Ponzano 93, 28003 Madrid.+34 91 535 35 18
- Gastromaquia: Simple but stunning food apparently. Pelayo 8, 28004 – Madrid. +34 91 522 64 13. In the Retiro district
Best Traditional Restaurant
- Dantzari: Far West of Madrid. Calle de Benjamín Palencia 4, 28691 Villanueva De La Cañada. +34 91 815 57 76
- La Maquina de Lugones: Paseo de la Habana 107, 28036 Madrid. +34 91 343 05 38. Just north of Bernabeu.
- Barrera: Calle de Alonso Cano 25, 28010 Madrid. +34 91 594 17 57. This is in Chamberi and will be tried soon!
Best Foreign Cuisine
- 99 Sushi Bar: Calle de Hermosilla 4, 28001 Madrid, Spain – 914 312 715; and Calle Ponzano 99, 28003 Madrid. +34 915 360 567
- Yataki: Panaese that has menu’s from 19-36euros. Calle de Hortaleza 72, 28004 Madrid. +34 91 562 66 60
- Krachai: Thai food with set menus for 13euros at lunch time. They have one smoking and one noon-smoking floor. Calle de Fernando VI 11, 28004 Madrid. +34 91 833 65 56. Again in my area and I love Thai food so a review will come soon…

Best Gastronomic shop
- Mercardo San Miguel: I wholeheartedly agree that this is THE best place, more here
- Senor Martin: Again, a wonderful choice. I wonder if the judges live in the same area as me. This fish shop is located in my local market. More about Madrid Markets, Chamberi in particular, here
